چکیده

of data, statistical analysis, etc. However, we now consider that biological factors, of which we are unaware and for which we have not controlled, have the potential to exert developmental effects on testis weight which are at least as great as the maximum effects that can be induced by the addition of a potent estrogen (DES) to the mother's drinking water during pregnancy and lactation. This conclusion, and our other experiences outlined above, have obvious relevance to the ongoing debate regarding the design and application of in vivo tests for the detection of adverse effects ofhormone disruptors. We consider it our scientific responsibility to bring these matters to the attention of all those involved in this area. Some of the results summarized in the letter above were part of work supported by contract BMH4-CT96-0314 from the European Union.

Pigment epithelium-derived factor: clinical significance in estrogen-dependent tissues and its potential in cancer therapy

Pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) is a glycoprotein that belongs to the family of non-inhibitory serpins. The broad spectrum of PEDF biological activity is evident when considering its effects in promoting cell survival and proliferation, as well as its antiangiogenic, antitumor, and anti-metastatic properties. Although the structural domains of the PEDF gene that mediate such diverse ef...

Edward Charles Dodds (1899-1973)

Edward Charles Dodds [3] researched the function and effects of natural and artificial hormones [4] on the endocrine system in England during the twentieth century. Though he first worked with hormones [4] such as insulin, Dodds focused on the effects of estrogen [5] in the body and how to replicate those effects with artificial substances. In 1938, along with chemist Robert Robinson, Dodds syn...

Influence of estrogen, progesterone and their synthetic derivatives on ovarian functions

Estrogen and progesterone, the main sex steroids mostly bound to plasma proteins while circulating in the bloodstream. Only unbound estrogen and progesterone are biologically active. Gonadotrophins like Luteinizing hormone (LH) and Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) promote ovulation and stimulate secretion of the sex hormones-estrogen and progesterone from the ovaries. These sex steroids stimu...

اثرات استروژن درمانی در زنان یائسه و ارتباط آن با سرطان پستان

Low levels of endogenous estrogens in postmenopausal women lead to several clinical problems. Some of these problems can be resolved by estrogen replacement therapy. The role of estrogen therapy in increasing the risk of breast cancer has not been well known yet. So, it was decided to study this controversial issue. In this study, 122 postmenopausal women, ranging in age from 46 to 61 years, we...
